Space and kern

Space n and o by hand, let the rest follow, then kern the pairs that still need it.

  1. Step 1: Space n and o by hand

With the Metrics tool, adjust n and o until nnonnoo reads evenly. Everything else is measured against them, so take your time.

    M
  2. Step 2: Link the obvious relatives

Type =n into the left side of m, h, r and p, and =o into the sides of c, d, e, q where they match.

  3. Step 3: Auto-space the rest

Font › Auto-space proposes side bearings for the remaining letters from your n and o. Compare the preview, then apply; Revert auto-spacing undoes it.

  4. Step 4: Group letters that kern alike

Put O, C, G, Q in a left group, and use Group accented letters for kerning so Á and Ä kern like A.

  5. Step 5: Kern the problem pairs

With the Kerning tool, drag the slider in pairs like To, AV and LT. Shift+arrows nudge by 10.

    K
  6. Step 6: Review everything in one list

Font › Kerning pairs lists every pair: sort, correct, clean up, and review the suggestions.
