Overshoots and alignment zones
Round letters reach a little past the lines; zones let points snap there.

Round letters like o dip slightly below the baseline and rise above the x-height so they look the same size as flat ones. These overshoots have zones; points snap into them while you draw. In OTF export, the zones become blue zones that help small sizes render evenly.
